November 24, 1928 - June 1, 2017
Ruby Capovilla, 88, passed away June 1, 2017 in Medford, Oregon after a short illness. She was born November 24, 1928 in Grenada, California. Her parents, Angelo Zanotto and Gina Poalin Zanotto were Italian immigrants. Her first language was Italian, but with three older sisters, she learned to speak English at an early age. Siskiyou County had a large Italian population, and she become the neighborhood interpreter.
She married Charles "Chile" S. Hammond in 1948. They operated a dairy and beef cattle ranch until Chile's death in 1967. She married Romolo "Cap" Capovilla, her high school sweetheart, in 1969. They carried on cattle ranching together near Yreka, Calif. until 1989, when they retired to Medford, Ore.
Ruby loved the livestock business, raising anything from chickens to Angus bulls. She worked one day a week at the Siskiyou Livestock Auction as a clerk from 1952 to 1989, and at the Siskiyou County General Hospital for a few years. In retirement, she was active in the Welcome Club; Sacred Heart Altar Guild; Pinochle Club; The Rose Society; and her favorite, the Red Hat Society. She was a 4-H leader, county fair home economics judge, served on the Siskiyou County Grand Jury, and was an aide to Representative John Doolittle for a short time.
She loved to interact with people, and her favorite thing to do was hosting dinner parties in her home. She was a good cook, drawing on recipes from her Italian heritage.
Ruby leaves behind two children, Debra Hammond Magee (Michael) of Philomath, Ore. and Chuck Hammond (Marcia) of Acampo, Calif. She had four grandchildren, Grant, Gina, Charlie, and Jenna; and three great-grandsons, Brandon, Cody, and Charles. She is also survived by her eldest sister, Louisa Perrazo; a brother-in-law, Frank Rios; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ramolo, in September of 2016.
The family will have a private service.
