Robert Thomas Johnston

Robert died December 20, 2010, at his home in Medford, Ore., at the age of 96.

Robert (Bob) was born to John Samuel Johnston and Ella Mae Poole, in East Chicago, Ind., on March 19, 1914. He moved to Ontario, Canada, in 1919, where he graduated from high school. In 1936, he married Rosa Veronica Humphries in Toronto. Together they moved to Seattle, Wash., where he was assigned to Great West Life Assurance Company and started his family.

In 1938, he joined the BF Goodrich company and held various positions in sales and management. Bob valued his work with BF Goodrich and considered it to be the foundation of his business career. In 1951, Bob and his family moved to Medford, Ore., where he opened the Johnston Stores - an appliance, television and tire store. In 1955, he opened the Johnston Stores Boat-Marine Center and later, in 1960, he moved Johnston Stores to the new Medford Shopping Center and expanded his business to include the Poly Clean Laundry and Dry Cleaning Center. In 1960 he developed and opened Howard Prairie Lake Resort outside of Ashland. Bob owned and operated the Resort for more than 47 years with his partners, and son, James.

He is survived by his wife, Rosa; and sons, Robert, of Los Angeles, Calif., James (Judi), of Ashland, Ore., Timothy (Nancy), of Granville, Ohio; and daughters, Susan Frohnmayer, of Portland, Ore. and Elizabeth (Steve) Edmonds, of Inglis, Florida; seven grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.
