Robert Blair Doolen passed away at home June 2, 2018 with family by his side.
Bob was born September 27, 1939 in Aurora, Illinois to Helen Blair Doolen and Harold Morris Doolen Sr. The family moved to Billings, Montana in 1941. Bob graduated from Billings Senior High School in 1957. He attended the University of Minnesota, where he earned a Bachelor of Science with Distinction in 1961 and a Master of Science in 1963.
Bob met his wife, Karen Trask Doolen, at a high school dance on January 11, 1957. They were married in Billings on December 20, 1961. Upon their graduations from the University of Minnesota, they returned to Billings, where Bob joined his father and brother in the family’s heavy construction equipment business, Western Equipment Company, which covered all of Montana and northern Wyoming. In 1971, Bob and Karen became the sole owners of the business. From 1975 through 1977, Bob attended the yearly three-week course at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Business Administration, receiving certification in the Smaller Company Management Program. In 1985, Western Equipment Company was sold. Bob then went into hospital administration at Deaconess Medical Center, where he was the Chief Financial Officer (CFO). In 1995, Bob and Karen moved to Medford, Oregon and Bob became the CFO and Sr. V.P. of Administration for the Asante Health System until he retired in 2002.
While in Billings, Bob was active in the Billings YMCA and served as president, was a member of Rotary, and was active in his church. In Medford, Bob served on the Medford Hospital Facilities Board for 11 years; was a member and chair of the Medford Budget Committee; a member of the Rotary Club of Medford; a past member of the Asante Investment Committee after his retirement; a loyal Holly Theatre volunteer and supporter; and a member of the First Presbyterian Church.
Over the years, Bob enjoyed being an instrument-rated pilot, golfing, photography, traveling, bicycling, swimming, and music. These various activities provided special and treasured time with family and friends.
Bob was deeply devoted to his family. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Karen; his beloved children and grandchildren: son, Erick and his wife, Toni, of Corvallis, Oregon and grandchildren, Garrett, Taylor and Nicole; daughter, Julie Kelsey, and her husband, Chris, of Spokane, Washington; a niece and nephew. Bob was predeceased by his parents, Harold and Helen Doolen, and his brother, Harold M. Doolen Jr.
The family wishes to thank the medical professionals who cared for Bob during his pancreatic cancer illness, including Rogue Regional Medical Center, Oregon Health and Science University, Home Health Care, and Asante Hospice Care. The family also extends gratitude to his caregivers from Visiting Angels.

A celebration of Bob’s life will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, June 11, 2018 at the First Presbyterian Church, 85 S. Holly St., Medford, OR. A reception will follow in the fellowship hall.
