Richard Mark Pistoresi

Richard Mark Pistoresi, 63, died on April 1, 2009 while vacationing on his much-loved island of Kauai. His wife, Patricia Alley and stepmother, Deb Pistoresi were with him.

Mark was born Feb. 17, 1946 in Madera, Calif. He attended parochial school in Sacramento - in his sophomore year he transferred to Hiram Johnson Senior High School until graduation in 1963. He attended Sacramento City College where he studied law enforcement and joined the KXE fraternity. Following his retirement, Mark was able to renew contact with his fraternity brothers giving him much enjoyment in the final years of his life.

His career with the California Youth Authority began in 1967. From 1969 to 1978 he worked in sales/distribution for United Vintners, Mirassou Vineyards and later was a manager at DeCicco's Restaurant. He returned to the Youth Authority in 1978 and worked at three facilities as a Youth Counselor before working at headquarters in Sacramento as a Safety Specialist. He retired in 2000 after having worked for the Youth Authority for over 25 years.

In 1973, his daughter Stacy was born. In 1999, his first grandson, Garrett was born; his second grandson, Alec was born in 2002. Becoming a grandfather was an event that changed Mark's life profoundly. Mark, known to the boys as Papa, proudly shared stories about these two boys and the joy they brought to his life.

In 1992, Mark married Patricia Alley. Mark was an accomplished cook and he and Pat often entertained family and friends in their home where they would work as a team preparing meals together. Mark also enjoyed playing golf; watching baseball games; and having raced super-modifies in his youth, enjoyed watching NASCAR. But his true love was being in a boat on the water, never missing an opportunity to fish with family and friends throughout his life.

In retirement, Mark and Pat moved to Oregon, where he became a proud volunteer at the VA's Rehabilitation Domiciliary in White City. He and Pat continued to entertain friends and family with their generous hospitality and travel - Kauai being his favorite.

Mark was preceded in death by his father Bruno R. Pistoresi, of Bodega Bay; mother Lora Mae Pistoresi, of Rancho Murieta. He is survived by his loving wife, Pat; daughter, Stacy Mattos; grandsons, Garrett and Alec, of Lincoln; sister, Shelby Cain of Sequim, Wash.; nephew Jacob Priestley, of Portland, Ore.; Aunt Ilene Smith of Sacramento, Calif.; numerous cousins; stepmother, Deb Pistoresi, of Ashland, Ore.; stepbrothers and sisters; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Steve Culver and Kathy Alley, of Davis; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Michael and Peggy Alley of Frederick, Md.; four nephews and one niece. His quick wit, outgoing personality and generous giving heart will be greatly missed. He loved his family and will be forever in our hearts.

There will be a river side memorial service on Oct. 3, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. at the Leisure Days Mobile Home Park, 20055 Hwy. 62, Shady Cove, Ore. Friends are invited to attend.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Mark's name to your local hospice or favorite charity.
