Opal Gibbs

Opal Geneva Gibbs, 95, died on Wednesday, November 10, 2010, in Medford, Ore. Opal was born to Augustus Cook and Minnie Etta Mathews Cook on July 28, 1915, in Selma, Calif. She graduated from Caruthers High School and attended Fresno State University where she received a bachelor of arts degree and her teaching credentials. Opal taught in various Monterey County schools, later becoming curriculum coordinator for the North Monterey County School.

Opal married Corporal Richard Gibbs on December 28, 1942, at the Methodist Church in Caruthers, Calif. She retired in 1971, and she and her husband, who was also a retired school teacher, traveled to various locations in the United States, as well as to Canada, Mexico, and Europe. They moved from Watsonville, Calif., to the Rogue Valley Manor in Medford, Ore., in 1988. Opal enjoyed reading, interior decorating, sewing, and traveling. Having been a bookkeeper, Opal was also known for her meticulous record keeping. Richard died in 2004.

Opal was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Augustus Dolma Cook. She is survived by an older sister, Garnet Juanita Bessey, of Oroville, Calif.; a younger brother, Thomas M. Cook, of Concord, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews.

Cremation arrangements have been made with Perl Funeral Home, and her ashes will be buried next to her husband at Belmont Memorial Park in Fresno, Calif.
