Olivia Todd "Grammie" Ryerson

On Oct. 24, 2008, Olivia Todd Ryerson passed away at home. Olivia was a longtime resident of the Rogue Valley, moving here when she was five years old. She was born on June 19, 1916, in Bismark, N.D. and was the daughter of William Angus Todd and Evelyn Felicia Wedge Todd.

Olivia attended Sunday School and Worship at the First Presbyterian Church of Medford. She was married to Laurence A. Ryerson in the church in 1942.

After graduating from Medford High School in 1933, Olivia received her teaching certificate from Southern Oregon Normal School. She began her teaching career in a one room school in Drew, Ore. Her teaching led her to schools in Minnesota and Oregon where she ended her 34 year career in 1976, retiring from Mae Richardson School in Central Point. She volunteered in the SMART reading program and was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International.

Many were greeted at the "U-Cut" Christmas tree farm where Olivia joined in the family business. Olivia, as an avid sports fan, attended almost all of the activities of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She kept fit by going to the YMCA water exercise class. She loved going for drives, camping, spending time with her family, staying up late playing games, singing and sharing wonderful stories.

Surviving Olivia are her four children, Larry Ryerson (Sandy), of Phoenix, Ore., Denny Ryerson (Patti), of Central Point, Ore., Steve Ryerson (Marilee), of Mona, Utah, and Cindy Bursk, of Phoenix, Ore.; 14 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and brothers, R. Angus Todd, of Medford, and Hubert W. Todd, of Elk Grove, Calif. She was preceded in death by her husband, Larry; sisters, Eleanor Todd Dixon and Edith Todd Brantley; brothers, Phillip H. Todd and Cdr. William E. Todd, USN, and son-in-law, Michael A. Bursk.

Contributions in Olivia's memory can be made to the Crater Foundation, P.O. Box 5172, Central Point, Ore., Phoenix-Talent Education Foundation, P.O. Box 698, Phoenix, Ore., 97535, or Doernbecher Children's Hospital, 1121 SW Salmon St., Portland, Ore., 97205.

A memorial service celebrating her 92 years will be held Saturday, Nov. 1, 2008, at the First Presbyterian Church in Medford, at 2 p.m. All who loved her dearly will always remember the impact she had on each and every one of them.
