Mildred B. Keyes

Mildred B. Keyes

Mildred, also known as "Millie", departed from us July 20, 2012, at the age of 90. Mildred is now in heaven with the Lord and with her husband of 52 years who preceded her on this journey 18 years ago. Mildred was born in Tulare, S. D. February 16, 1922, to John C. Lawyer and Beatrice McDermott Lawyer of O'Neill, Neb. She was one of 10 children and lived on the prairies of South Dakota and Nebraska throughout her childhood.

Mildred met and married her beloved husband, Lorin C. Keyes, in O'Neil Neb. December 14, 1942. Lorin joined the U.S. Army during WWII. Mildred moved to Portland, Ore. in a Model T Ford that had flaps for windows with her mother and father and infant daughter where Mildred's father found work welding Navy ships at the Portland harbor. Mildred also became a welder and was one of the original "Rosie the Riveters" in the shipyard in Portland until Lorin could rejoin his family.

Lorin and Mildred made the military a career for 28 years and traveled the world, living in Japan twice, France, and Hawaii, as well as throughout the United States. She supported her husband and family in all their endeavors, and was adaptable to all of the hardships experienced by military wives.

Mildred was a lovely and wonderful woman, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, seamstress, cook, stained glass artist, and oil painter. She had a delightful sense of humor and everyone who knew her truly enjoyed her sweet nature.

When Lorin retired from the U.S. Army they moved to Salem, Ore., where they lived for 30 years until Lorin passed and Mildred moved to Medford to be with her daughters. Mildred loved birds, butterflies, bright red cars, chocolate ice cream, and living in God's country with all of the magnificent trees.

Mildred is survived by four children, Mary Van Horn and Kathryn Keyes of Medford, Ore., Barbara Griffin of Grants Pass, Ore., and Mark Keyes of Sulphur Springs, Texas; along with 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

On Sunday, July 22 at 7:00 p.m. a viewing and Rosary will take place at Rogue Valley Funeral Alternatives, 550 Business Park Dr., Medford, Ore. A funeral Mass will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church Monday, July 23 at 8:30 a.m.

Mildred will be interned with Lorin at the Willamette National Cemetery in Happy Valley, Ore., outside of Portland.
