Mel Boyd, 77, of Eagle Point, Oregon, passed away April 24, 2018. He was born June 20, 1940 in Watertown, South Dakota, the only child to Robert Boyd and Charline Mahanke. When he was a child, the family moved to Richmond, California, where Mel attended school and grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area.
In 1957, he joined the U.S. Navy, where he continued his education and served in the Fleet Air Support Squadron at NAS Alameda, California. On September 1, 1962, he joined the police department in Albany, California and rose to the rank of Captain, where he remained until his retirement in June of 1988.
He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Judith; daughter, Cynthia Boyd; stepson, William Herwood; grandson, Jonathan Boyd Russell; and step-grandson, Jack Herwood.
A viewing will be held April 30, 2018 at 9 a.m. at Perl Funeral Home, 2100 Siskiyou Blvd., Medford, OR 97504, followed by funeral services 11 a.m. Interment will begin promptly at 2 p.m. at Eagle Point National Cemetery, 2763 Riley Rd., Eagle Point, OR 97524. Committal services will be in the shelter from 2:00-2:25 p.m. A gathering will follow at The Pavillion at Talon Grill, 100 Eagle Point Dr., Eagle Point, OR.
