Melinda was born in Ashland. She attended the University of Washington where she received her BA in Textile Design, and was a recipient twice of the Milnor Roberts Art Scholarship. She spent her apprenticeship at the Factory of Visual Art in Seattle, Wash., and attended S.O.U. for her post graduate studies. She was employed for many years at Nordstrom's and the Bon Marche, both of Seattle, Wash., as a display manager, visual merchandise manager and merchandising team manager.

Melinda was a traveler, gardener, gourmet cook, who loved art, laughing and life.

Her parents, Anna Mae (Platko) Smith and James B. Smith are both deceased. Melinda is niece to, Florence Schilling, Bernice Haines, Pearl and Joe Platko. She was cousin to many in the valley and surrounding areas. She had a special relationship to her cousins, Judy (Platko) Chiosso-Glass, Jamie (Chiosso) Diamond, Vicki (Platko) Johnson and Janet Schilling. She also leaves her special pug, Tucker.

Melinda's other "family," the soul sisters, are a special group of women in the Seattle, Wash., area. Their circle is now broken but will always be complete in spirit.
