Mary Height Austin

Mary Height Austin, born to parents, Jess D. Height and

Antha Bedingfield in Joseph, Ore.

Mary was preceded in death by her brother, Homer Height; and sister, Virginia R. Pearce.

On February 8, 1946, she married Elwin L. Austin, they had 53 wonderful years together.

Mary is survived by her son, Joel H. Austin of Ketchikan, Alaska; daughter, Lynda R. Currier of Central Point, Ore.; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one niece; and three nephews.

Mary graduated from Phoenix High School, May 20, 1932 and Southern Oregon Normal School, Ashland, Ore., on July 17, 1936. Throughout her life, she worked for the original Harry & David on a dictaphone and hand signed their

Christmas cards. In the early 1950s, Mary worked at the

University of Loma Linda as the private secretary to the


Ultimately choosing teaching as her career choice, Mary taught school for the Seventh Day Conference for 36 years in Loma Linda and Redlands, Calif. Wanting to get out of the big cities, Elwin and Mary moved to Fort Dick, Calif., where she continued her teaching in Crescent City, Calif., and Brookings, Ore., and the Rogue River Academy.

One of her favorite things to do was work at the Community Service Center, sewing pajamas for children in need.

Mary will be buried at the Eagle Point National Cemetery. At her request, there will be no service.

In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Seventh Day Adventist Community Service in her name, would be appreciated. The Seventh Day Adventist Church in Medford had a 100 Year Celebration in January 2008, Mary was present and commemorated as one of the first members.
