Marjorie Lorane Swanson, 82, passed away August 22, 2012, at Rogue Valley Manor Health Center. She was born January 18, 1930, in Mason City, Iowa, the daughter of Laurence and Edna (Snell) Lysne. She attended Mason City schools, graduating in 1947. She attended Mason City Junior College and studied pre-nursing at St. Olaf College, Northfield, Minn. In 1951, she earned a bachelors degree in nursing from the University of Minnesota, and was elected to Sigma Theta Tau, honorary scholastic sorority of nursing. On March 31, 1951, she married Richard L. Swanson, in Mason City. He was drafted into the Army and wherever they were stationed, she practiced OB-Gyn nursing. In 1964, after her husband returned from Korea and had completed medical school and residency, the couple moved to Medford, Ore., where Dr. Swanson established his otolaryngology practice.
Over the years, she was co-leader for Campfire Girls and Cub Scouts, active in the Parent Teacher Association, accompanist for youth choir and men's chorus, and worked on many community projects. She was a Life Member of Medford Junior Service League, was active in the Jackson County Medical Auxiliary and past president of Chapter CP, P.E.O. Sisterhood, where she also served as musician for many years.
In 1973, she returned to nursing at Rogue Valley Memorial Hospital, ending her career in 1979. She then volunteered with the Red Cross Blood Bank and with Family Planning at the Public Health Department for eight years. Marjorie enjoyed all kinds of music. Since 1973, she and Dr. Swanson were charter members of the Rogue Valley Chorale, and they sang in church choir for over 45 years. She played piano from age seven and enjoyed contributing to the music of her church and community. She played for several group activities at the Rogue Valley Manor, where she lived since 2006.
She enjoyed golf, tennis, walking, reading, family ski trips, knitting, and cross-stitch. She liked trips down the Rogue River, time at their time-share in San Diego Estates, and family time spent at their Lake of the Woods cabin. The Swansons enjoyed several trips to New York City to see plays, and sang at Carnegie Hall with the Chorale. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Dr. Richard Swanson; and stepbrother, William Thompson, of Willmar, Minn. She is survived by sons, Mark Richard, of Camden, Maine; and Dr. Paul Eric, and his wife, Dr. Virginia Swanson, of Bainbridge Island, Wash.; daughter, Janet Lynn and partner, Lorna Bieri, of Portland, Ore.; six grandchildren, Katy, Jon, Jeanette, Amanda, Paris, and Isabelle; great-granddaughter, Rowen; stepmother, Lucille Lysne; and stepbrother, Joe Thompson, and his wife, Kay, of Willmar, Minn.
