Louise E. Gleim Fulton Hallsted Helmer

Louise E. Gleim Fulton Hallsted Helmer

Louise passed away Friday, July 13, 2012, at her summer home in Talent, Ore. She was born May 21, 1919, to Charles Will and Cora Amelia Gleim, at the home of her grandmother Hensley, on Nursery St., in Ashland, Ore. Louise attended Talent Elementary School and graduated from Klamath Union High School in 1937. She went to business school in Klamath Falls, Ore.

She married Robert Fulton in 1938, in Fallon, Nev., and they had two children, Carolynn R. Fulton Rutledge and Robert E. Fulton Sr. One of her early jobs was as a receptionist for Harry & David in Medford, Ore. After World War II she went to work for Cal-Ore Lumber Company in Ashland, Ore., first as a secretary/bookkeeper and then moved into a sales position covering Eugene, Ore., Klamath Falls, Ore., and Redding, Calif. She was one of only two women active in lumber sales nationally at that time. She moved to Redding, Calif., where she was divorced from Robert Fulton.

In 1956, she moved to Honolulu, Hawaii after being widowed by pilot Collins Reed's tragic plane crash in Canby, Calif. There she went to work as the office manager for Whitaker and Dennis Architects and the Producers' Council. She was instrumental in organizing the Honolulu Chapter of the Architectural Secretaries Association. She later married Clinton T. Hallsted, founder and president of Honolulu Wood Treating Co. Ltd., with whom she traveled extensively for both business and pleasure. They were initial owners of a penthouse apartment at 1350 Ala Moana Boulevard, the first high-rise building in Waikiki. She lived there for over 30 years. After being widowed by Mr. Hallsted she married James F. Helmer, who was a retired United Air Lines flight navigator. They were world travelers. She especially enjoyed their safaris in Africa.

Louise enjoyed playing golf and won many awards and trophies in golf tournaments. She loved music, playing the organ, and arts and crafts. She took one special trip around the world with her sister, Alice. Her last trip, at age 89, was a 19-day Panama Canal cruise. In her later years she often reminisced about her wonderful life and many friends while raising her martini glass in a toast to them! Over the years she contributed generously to many charities.

Louise is survived by one sister-in-law, Margie Gleim, of Talent, Ore.; her daughter, Carolynn R. Rutledge, of Talent, Ore.; and son, Robert E. Fulton Sr., and his wife, Elizabeth, of Talent, Ore. and Reno, Nev.
