Kenneth Hugh Burgess Sr.

June 19, 1940 - November 13, 2017

Kenneth Hugh Burgess of Phoenix, Oregon passed away peacefully Monday, November 13, 2017 in his home at the age of 77. He was born June 19, 1940 in Sacramento, California. In his younger years he lived in many locations around the Northwest. His father was a musician, a mountain lion hunter, a prospector, and all-around adventurer. After his parents divorced he most often lived with his mother in the San Diego area during the school year and with his dad during the summer months. When he was a teenager he had many adventures with his father prospecting in the mountains of Alaska, later in the arroyos of Arizona, and living in many places in-between.

In 1957 he joined the Air Force and started raising a young family. Later he went to work for the phone company in Los Angeles and San Diego. In 1971 he transferred to Montana and worked for Mountain Bell for several years. In 1981 he met and married Terry Ehret Burgess in Billings, Montana, adopted her 5-year-old daughter, and became very active in the LDS faith. He also developed Hodgkin’s Disease in 1981 and had relapses in 1986 and again in 1992. In 1988 he moved with his family to Phoenix, Ore. and in 1992 retired from US West in Medford after 30 years on the job. Also that year, his Hodgkin’s Disease was cured after having a bone marrow transplant. Thanks to his donor, his older brother, he lived another 25 years.

When he was younger he enjoyed prospecting, hunting, motorcycling, flying, hiking, camping, and many other outdoor activities. He loved his family, his church, and in his retirement years he grew to love golfing, especially with his son, grandson, and older brother. He enjoyed traveling back to Montana and to California to see friends and family, and he loved the Oregon Coast, especially Bandon.

He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Thomas (Ruth) Burgess and his mother, Virginia Henrietta (Ralph) Wood. His eldest son, Kenneth Hugh Burgess Jr. of Oakdale, Calif. also passed in July of this year.

He leaves behind his wife, Terry Burgess; his older brother, Del (Melodie) Burgess; daughter-in-law, Paula Burgess; sons, Ron (Lois) Burgess and Gary Burgess; daughter, Lisa (Danny) Gage; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

His memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. November 25 at the LDS Church in Medford, 2900 Juanipero Way. In lieu of flowers, his family asks those wishing to honor him to send donations to Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle.
