John Emmet McCardell, 92, of Medford, Ore., passed away on December 5, 2010, at a local adult foster care home. He was born August 2, 1918, in Plainview, Neb., to John Abner and Inger Marie (Petersen) McCardell. He grew up on a farm in Plainview, Neb., and attended Nebraska State College. His family moved to Calif., in 1938. On April 2, 1944, he married Barbara Grow in Citrus Heights, Calif., while serving in the U.S. Navy in World War II. He served in Africa and the Pacific aboard the U.S.S. Harris, a troop transport. In 1951, they moved to Ashland, Ore., from San Diego, Calif., then to Talent, Ore., in 1952. They have resided in Medford, Ore., since 1961.
John was a building contractor and a charter member of the Home Builders Association of Jackson County. He was president of the association in 1966. He was a member of the Carpenters Union for 65 years, and was also a member of the Medford Lions.
He loved to work in the garden and go fishing and camping with his family. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Barbara McCardell; four children,Jon McCardell (Barbara), of Ashland, Ore.; Sue (Dave) Gordon, of Cave Junction, Ore.; Mike (Nancy) McCardell, of Lakewood, Calif.; and Chris McCardell of Medford, Ore. He has six grandchildren, Drew (Kristi) McCardell, Jennifer (James) Cox, Matthew Gordon, Ben Gordon, Jennie Gordon, and Paul Gordon; and four great-granddaughters, Brooke, Courtney, Cassie, and Emily. He was preceded in death by his only sister, Elva (McCardell) Neifert, in 1999.
Family services will be held at 11:00 a.m., on August 2, 2011, at Eagle Point National Cemetery, with arrangements by Rogue Valley Funeral Alternatives. Contributions may be made to The Arc of Jackson County (Advocates for the Developmentally Disabled), 121 N. Central Ave., Medford, Ore.
