John Edward Setchell

A celebration of the life of John Edward Setchell will be held on Saturday, June 30th at 2:00 p.m. in the community room of the Rose Court apartments, 1100 N. Rose St. behind the Umpqua Bank in Phoenix, Ore. with Dr. Dale Monroe officiating. Parking available on the street. Ellen 541-535-7483.

Jack passed away at the age of 87 on Monday, June 18, 2007 in Roseburg, Ore. Jack was born on February 10, 1920 in Bala, Kans. to William A. Setchell and Sarah Luella Chapman Setchell. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Charles C. Setchell and Louis (Bud) Russell Setchell who was killed in WW2; his wife and best friend, Phyllis Setchell; and his step-daughter, Linda Lee Hopkins.

Jack moved with his family to Ashland, Ore. in 1937 where he finished high school. He worked on the family farm until he was drafted into the U.S. Army. He served as an Military Police officer stationed in New Caladonia during WW2. He concluded his Army career in Arkansas, Camp Robinson, Tex. and was honorably discharged from Ft. Lewis Wash. When he returned to the Ashland area he married Bessie Grow, they were later divorced.

Jack moved to Smith River, Calif. where he was the calf man on the Westbrook Ranch. He was introduced to Phyllis Rue by his sister, Ellen. Jack and Phyllis married and moved to Central Point, Ore. were he worked part time at the Rogue Auction barn. He enjoyed his retirement years growing vegetables, fruit, flowers and raising rabbits which he shared with his family and friends. They later moved to Sutherlin to be near family. He continued to enjoy his retirement until the death of his dear wife, Phyllis.

Jack was known for his generosity and a sparkle in his eyes. He always had a joke to share. When Jack was growing up, his family called him "Happy Jack".

Jack is survived by his sister, Ellen Elizabeth Setchell Barker Gatter, who resides in Phoenix, Ore.; his adopted daughter, Carol Moore in Phoenix, Ore., step-children, Robert Rue of Boise, Idaho and Esther Dies, Sutherlin; and several grandchildren; great-grandchildren; nieces, Linda Barker Monroe in Bellingham, Wash. and Marilyn Barker Horton, Beaverton, Ore. and nephew, Richard William Barker; adopted niece and nephew, Cynthia and Charles Setchell Jr.; many grandnieces and grandnephews. Family was very dear to Jack and he will be missed by us all.
