John 'J.D.' David Drake

Dec. 5, 1957 - May 23, 2009

The big guy has left the valley for the last time, looking for greener pastures. Having been born in Hemet, Calif., to Margaret and John Drake, J.D. lived most of his life in the Rogue Valley. He hunted, fished and camped most every known and unknown place possible in Southern Oregon, leaving us from one of his favorite places, Natural Bridge campground near Union Creek.

Having a bit of wanderlust, J.D. took up truck driving after graduating from Medford Senior High and had tried many other jobs. Eventually he began turning wrenches and repaired cars and trucks wherever he parked for a year or ten.

J.D. returned to the valley to spend his last years with his mother, daughter, Charlotte and son, Eric, who survive. He was very happy to have been present when his beloved grandchildren, Caleb and Sophie, were born, as well as attend the wedding of Eric and Jill last year. J.D. missed his brother, Daryl, who lives on the East coast and his father and grandparents who preceded him in death.

As a cab driver for both Valley and Yellow, J.D. tried out comedy routines and told many tall tales to his passengers and friends but declined to entertain larger audiences preferring to be close enough to see tears of laughter rolling down their faces.

J.D.'s competitive passion was for shooting pool and was a familiar face in many bars and pool halls investing much time and money toward that skill. He had also spent time with his daughter in Tae Kwan Do lessons and swimming with Caleb.

J.D.'s wit and tall tales will be missed by family, friends and many acquaintances.

No services are planned, eventual inurnment will be at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens.
