John Carlton Clarke, M.D.

John Carlton Clarke, M.D. passed away peacefully November 15 in Kentfield, California with his family by his side.

John was born November 21, 1928 in Los Angeles, the third of three children of Alfred Harrison Clarke and Evangeline Marion Clarke (née Lennon). After attending grade school in San Anselmo, John graduated from St. Ignatius College Preparatory, the University of San Francisco, and UC San Francisco School of Medicine. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1959 to 1963 and practiced general surgery until 1990.

He met his future wife, Joyce Elaine Trundy, on Valentine's Day, 1953. They were wed November 21, 1953, John's 25th birthday. Together they lived in San Francisco, California; Biloxi, Mississippi; Mill Valley, California; and finally in Ashland, Oregon. During a long and happy retirement, John served as a news announcer on the local public radio station (JPR), grew grapes and made wondrous wines with Gary and Coralie Farnham, and volunteered with the City of Ashland and the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. He led a full life.

He is survived by his children, Kevin (Rhonda), Leo (Betsy), Paul (Jane), and Amy (Larry); and six grandchildren, Harrison, Elliott, John, Oliver, Theodore, and Ruby. John was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce and son, Christopher. No formal ceremonies are planned, but a celebration of John's life will be held at a later date.
