John August Hunt

John August Hunt, 98, passed away peacefully at home in Medford, on Sunday, Feb. 15, 2009. He will be fondly remembered by all who knew him as a courtly, generous gentleman with a keen intellect and lively sense of humor.

He was born in Watrous, Saskatchewan, Canada, Nov. 18, 1910, to Sara (Hanlon) Hunt and John Albert Hunt. He earned a teaching degree in math from the Normal School at the University of Saskatchewan and his cost accounting credentials from LaSalle University. In 1936, he married Freda Katherine Beavis and they began their married life in Kimberley, British Columbia, where he worked as an accountant for Cominco, Ltd. In 1951, he was transferred to the company's Cominco American operations, working for eighteen years in Montana and Missouri before being assigned to its head office in Spokane, Wash. After retirement, the Hunts enjoyed summers at their home on Swan Lake, Mont., and winters in Arizona, Hawaii, and Southern California before moving to Medford in 1989.

Public service was always an important part of Mr. Hunt's life, and he served for many years in Kimberley as chairman of his local school board and as head of the local Boy Scouts organization. He was a member of Rotary International and the Masonic Lodge. He served in the Rocky Mountain Rangers Canadian Army Reserves, during WWII. He loved music and poetry and was an avid reader, gardener, and fisherman, supplying family and neighbors with vegetables, berries, flowers, and fish throughout his adult life.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Freda; and his siblings, Wallace Hunt, Harold Hunt, Margaret McKenzie, and Cleta Brown. His is survived by his children, Gordon and Judy Hunt, Harold and Diana Hunt, and Marjorie and Eric Overland; eleven grandchildren, Loren, Irene, Kevin, Albert, and Bryan Hunt, Robin Engstrom, Sean, Timothy,

and Maryann Overland, Dawn Abed and Dana Little; seven great-grandchildren; and seven nieces and nephews and their families.
