Janice Carol Perttu

Janice Carol Perttu, beloved wife and mother, passed away on June 25 after a prolonged illness. She is survived by her husband Rauno, son Kirk, daughter Emily, and her sister Laurie Gaiser, who lives near Whitefish, Montana.

Janice was born in Seattle in 1950. When she was a year old her parents William and Marcia Gaiser moved the family to Portland, where she grew up. She received her BS and MS degrees with honors in geology from Portland State University. Jan and her husband, both geologists, lived in several states before settling in the Applegate Valley 25 years ago.

In the Applegate Valley, Jan quickly became involved in numerous community activities. As her children attended Ruch school, Jan became involved in school activities and the PTO. She was one of the founders of the Applegate Partnership and the Applegate Watershed Council, which in the 1990's gained national recognition for its efforts to balance forest usage with watershed protection. Janice became the first Applegate Watershed Coordinator. She and her staff completed numerous restoration projects. She received recognition and honors for her work with the watershed.

Jan was an expert and avid skier and loved outdoor activities. Jan and her husband traveled extensively, both for work and pleasure. She will be remembered and missed for her enjoyment of life and people, her kind and generous spirit, and for her wonderful sense of humor.

A celebration of Janice's life will be held on Saturday, July 14, 2:00 p.m., at the Fellowship Hall of the Ruch Community Bible Church. Dress casually.
