James Robert Marks

James Robert Marks, 81, passed away at Hearthstone Nursing Facility in Medford, Ore. Tuesday, March 4, 2014 five days shy of his 82nd birthday.

Jimmy, as he was known to friends and family, was born March 9, 1932 in Syracuse, N.Y. to Beatrice Scher and Seymour Marks. He moved to Los Angeles, Calif. with his family at the age of 14. He married Shirley Rotter in 1953 while they were attended college in Los Angeles.

His career goals in education wer interrupted by service at the end of the Korean War. He went on to become a college professor earning two doctorates, an Ed.D. in Education from the University of Southern California and a Ph.D. in Psychology from the London College of Applied Science in London, England. He was one of the founding fathers of West Los Angeles College. James was knighted by the Knights of Malta for his pioneering work in founding educational media centers.

Jimmy and his wife were avid USC football fans, their alma mater, and attended every home game for over 45 years!

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Shirley Rotter Marks; and five children, Diana Marks, Glenn Marks, Bruce Marks, Gary Marks, and Deborah Marks Williams. There are eight grandchildren and two more on the way.

James and his wife, Shirley, moved to Medford in 2010. He was buried with military honors at Eagle Point National Cemetery March 6, 2014.
