Jim was born in Spartanburg, N.C., and graduated from Camden High School in Camden, N.Y. He served in the U.S. Navy for two years. After the Navy, he settled in Vallejo, Calif., and served as a firefighter on the Mare Island and Vallejo Fire Departments. He retired as captain on the Vallejo Fire Department. He then began his second career as a real estate broker, owning two offices in Vallejo. He continued his education and eventually became a mortgage banker, retiring for good in 1998. In 1979, Jim and Nina Kinney married, blending their families, and eventually moving from California to Oregon.
Jim is survived by wife, Nina; children, Roberta (Italo) Durighello, Daniel (Kim) Kinney, Ernie (Heidi) Coggins, Christopher (Brenda) Coggins, Scott (Elizabeth) Kinney, and Jason Coggins; grandchildren, Giustino (Hannah) Durighello, Nicholas (Katie) Durighello, Hanna Durighello, Robert Durighello, Kristen Kinney, Devin Coggins, Cabe Coggins, and Sarah and Lauren Kinney; mother, Ruth Coggins; sister, Mary Jane (Tim) Scouten; brothers, Jeff Coggins, and Joe Coggins; along with numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father, James M. Coggins Sr.; and his sister, Ruth Sergi.
