In Loving Memory

George A. Holt

A longtime Rogue Valley resident, business owner, and beloved husband, father, stepfather, grandfather and great grandfather passed away unexpectedly from complications due to pneumonia and respiratory failure. He was born March 27, 1923, to Lottie and Gilbert Holt, in a traveling timber town in Jadie, Okla. He married Estelle Parsons and they had two sons, Bob and Gene Holt. They moved to Lakeview Ore., in 1941, where George and his dad worked in the logging business.

George was a W.W. II Veteran serving in the U.S. Army in the combat division. He was honorably discharged in 1946 and returned to Lakeview. They moved to Medford, Ore., in 1948, where he continued logging and later bought a dairy in Talent, Ore., and was active in the local 4-H program.

In 1962 he started A-1 Telephone Answering Service and was very active serving as President of the Northwest Division and was on the board of the National Telephone Answering Service. He made life long friends and devoted employees with whom he still remained close. In 1999 he sold the business and retired.

George was a life member of the Medford Elks Lodge #1168 and served as Exalted Ruler from 1971-72. He was a member and served as President of the Rogue Investment Club numerous times.

On November 24, 1986, he married the love of his life, Karlene Wiltermood, and became a devoted stepfather to her son, Kevin Wade. George was an avid hunter and fisherman and competed in many bowling and golf tournaments. He made several trips down the scenic Rogue River fishing for salmon and steelhead. He enjoyed traveling in his motor home with family and friends, and was always ready to go to parties and family gatherings. He was known for his sense of humor, stories of the past and believed in honor, truth and keeping his word.

This last year was special and filled with traveling to Arizona, out-fishing his wife in the Blackbird fishing derby and traveling in October to Oklahoma where his life had begun visiting family and friends. One of his joys was watching Kevin compete in Special Olympic Events and was very proud of Kevin's work at Goodwill.

George is survived by his wife, Karlene; sons, Bob (Joanne), Gene; stepson, Kevin Wade; grandsons, Barry (Diane), Bob (Susan), and Gregg (Kris); eight great grandchildren; one brother; one sister; and several nieces and nephews. George will be greatly missed by many people.

Donations in his name can be directed to: Jackson County Special Olympics, P.O. Box 4397, Medford, OR 97501, or Elks Children's Eye Clinic, Medford Elks Lodge, 202 N. Central Ave., Medford, OR 97501.
