August 22, 1921 November 16, 2010

Gerry Bartz was born on August 22, 1921, in Kewanee, Ill., and passed away on Tuesday, November 16, 2010. He stood out in the crowd, a unique and wonderful person who will be deeply missed by many.

After graduating from the University of Illinois, Gerry served in the U.S. Army from 1943 until 1945. With the end of World War II, he became a U.S. Residence Officer in occupied

Germany (Governor of Upper Bavaria). Upon returning home, he attended Willamette University, School of Law, graduating in 1955. After practicing law in Portland, Ore., for three years, he moved his family to Salem where he served for many years as an Assistant Attorney General for the State of Oregon. Well known for speaking his mind, he did not waiver in what he believed to be true or right. He believed the Salem community deserved the best and gave it his best efforts.

Gerry made numerous contributions to the community. A few examples would be that he was the founder and

president of the Salem City Club, president of the Oregon Symphony Society, member of the Board of Directors that founded the Salem Boys Club, seven years on the Salem Planning Commision, and organized Salem's first soccer team, the "Salem Kickers."

Gerry was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Jeanene; and adopted son, Peter. He is survived by his daughter, Jenny Bartz Schultz; grandchildren, Alexandria and Findley; and sister, Bette Bartz, Lt. Col. (Retired).

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., on Thursday, December 2, 2010, at Capital Manor, 1955 Salem Dallas Hwy, in Salem, Ore. Please join us for a celebration of his life. For further information, contact Virgil T. Golden Funeral
