George S. Kirkpatrick Jr.



George S. Kirkpatrick Jr., 80, of Palm Desert, Calif., passed away June 21, 2008, at his home of natural causes. His wife, Joan Mary Kirkpatrick, was at his side at the time of his death. He was born Aug. 22, 1927, to George S. Kirkpatrick and Bernice Irene in Englewood, Colo., where he spent most of his childhood.



In 1944 he married Violet Freeman and eventually moved his young family of two boys, and two girls to Oregon. He went to work at an ealy age into the Supermarket grocery business and spent many years as a store manager with Safeway Supermarkets. After managing stores in several Oregon cities for Safeway he moved his family to Cresent city, Calif., where he bought and owned Wayside Market. In 1968 he moved to the Rogue Valley and began to find locations and build the Minute Market Convenience Stores. After 40 years there are Minute Markets in Medford, Phoenix, and Ashland which are still owned by the Kirkpatrick family.



George married Joan Pepin on July 28, 1978, in Las Vegas, Nev., and later adopted her daughter, Cyndi, of Seattle, Wash.



George was a lifelong avid golfer and a past member of the Rogue Valley Country Club. He was a current member and lived at the Chaparral Country Club in Palm Desert, Calif. He loved Arabian horses and owned horses most of his life.



George is survived by wife, Joan Mary Kirkpatrick, of Palm Desert, Calif.; daughters and sons-in-laws, Sandra and Bill Lynch, of Medford, Karen and John Griffin, of Medford, Cyndi Kirkpatrick, of Seattle, Wash; sons and daughters-in-laws, Mike and Cindy Kirkpatrick, of Central Point; sisters and brothers-in-law, Ethel and Jim Reese, of Florida, Marg and John Wullscheleger, of Colo., Mary Anne Howell of Denver, Colo.; brothers and sisters-in-law, Dick and Mary Kirkpatrick, of Palm Desert, Calif.; Harvey and Karen Kirkpatrick, of Broomfield, Colo.



George Has 14 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren, who he got to enjoy last year at his 80th birthday party and family reunion. All of his family and friends will miss him dearly.



A memorial service will be held Aug. 2, 2008, at — p.m. in the Chapel at Conger-Morris Funeral Home, 800 S. Front St. Central Point, Ore. 541-664-3361.
