Gavin Loren Reynolds, 75, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 15, 2011, at his home in Medford, Ore., after a courageous battle with cancer.
Gavin was born in Essexville, Mich., on August 5, 1935, to the late Earl E. and Erma N. (Willette) Reynolds. Affectionately known as Guffy and later Guff, he made friends easily, and was a good athlete with a fondness for baseball. He was also an accomplished softball player and dancer.
He left Bay City, Mich., for the U.S. Army to serve as a supply manager from 1957 to 1959, in Anchorage, Alaska. While in Alaska, he met and fell in love with Cecelia Cindy J. Zerby, and they returned to Bay City, where they married on September 12, 1959.
He worked with American Machine & Foundry (AMF) in Bay City as a salesman. Gavin moved West to work as a retail store manager for the Zales Corporation in Longview, Wash., and moved to the Rogue Valley in 1966, where he managed the downtown Medford Zales store until 1975. He was active with the Medford Downtown Merchants Association and enjoyed the friendly Main Street competition between Zales, Brophy's, Lawrence's, and John Nuich Jewelers. Gavin had entrepreneurial aspirations and in 1975, he purchased and operated BJ Jewelers in Ashland, Ore., until 1984. He then accepted a role as sales director for Paul Brooker Sales, where he traveled a territory and consulted for retail business owners until 2000. He then took a similar role for Wingate Sales Solutions before retiring in 2006.
Gavin was recognized as an outstanding salesman, and always believed wholeheartedly in the products and services that he represented. He enjoyed the beauty and majesty of the West in his travels covering his territory. He was an avid gardener and often generously shared his bountiful harvest with friends and neighbors. He also enjoyed debating politics and watching all sports on television.
He was a past board member of the Elks Lodge, Ashland, Ore.; and member of Moose Lodge and Eagles Lodge, both in Medford, Ore.
He was preceded in death by his father, Earl E.; mother, Erma N. (Willette); brothers, Eldon R., and Orlin; and son, Scott E.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Cindy; and children, Kelly (Alicia), of Austin, Texas, and Kasi (Richard) Griggs, of Warren, Ore. He was blessed with eight grandchildren, who were truly the apples of his eye - Michael, Kyle, and Nathan Reynolds, of Nampa, Idaho, Ben, Lauren and Megan Griggs, of Warren, Ore.; and Jack and Kaitlyn Reynolds, of Austin, Texas. He is also survived by siblings, Audrey (William) Nelson, Gloria Nuenke, John (Florence) Reynolds, and Marilyn Trump.
The family would like to express its appreciation for the medical care provided by Dr. Gerald Ahmann, and hospice services provided by Asante Health System. No services are planned at this time.
