Florence Evelyn Rohrs

December 8, 1922 - March 23, 2008

Florence Evelyn Rohrs died on Easter Sunday, March 23, 2008, at the age of 85, at Rogue Valley Medical Center in Medford, from respiratory complications. She was with her daughter, Elise; son, John; son-in-law, Jeff; and granddaughter, Holly.

Florence was born in Boise, Idaho, on December 8, 1922, to Emmett and Nina Thompson. She joined her big sisters, Carol and Elise, and her big brother, William. She spent her formative years in the Boise, Idaho, area and in Seattle, Wash. She obtained her teaching credential at Boise Junior College after graduating at the age of 18. After teaching for three years, she took a break and worked at the Boeing plant in Seattle, Wash. She enlisted in the Navy in New York City in 1944. After her discharge in April, 1946, she completed her B.A. in Abnormal Psychology, on the G.I. Bill, at Washington State University, in Pullman, Wash., receiving her diploma in 1947, and a graduate fellowship in psychology.

She met Harold James Rohrs in California and they were married on July 21, 1950. They had twin boys, John and James, and two daughters, Nina and Elise. She continued teaching elementary school for the next 28 years. She retired from teaching to live in Twin Peaks, Calif. It is no surprise that Florence was active in the Lake Arrowhead Community Presbyterian Church, American Association of University Women (AAUW), League of Women Voters, Toastmasters, VFW, and volunteered as the news/program director for Channel 6, Lake Arrowhead Community News and Weather.

Florence's husband died in 1999. She continued to live in Twin Peaks until she moved to Shady Cove in 2002, to be with her daughter, Elise. Florence continued to be active in AAUW, League of Women Voters and joined the Friends of the Library and the Greater Shady Cove Boosters. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Central Point.

Florence had enduring strength of spirit balanced with a wry sense of humor and an unparalleled zest for life. Her insatiable curiosity drove her to a life of learning. She traveled extensively, was an avid reader and greatly enjoyed civic activities and volunteering to help others.

Florence is survived by her sons, James, of Garden Grove, Calif, John (Alejandra), of Houston, Texas; daughters, Nina Rohrs, of Portland, and Elise Smurzynski (Jeff), of Shady Cove; grandsons, John David Stech and Paul Rohrs; granddaughter, Holly Kirby (Lance); and great-granddaughter, Isabelle Kirby. She will be missed by her extended family, niece, Nancy Frisch (Tony); Christine Beck (Rick), and daughters, Samantha, Sydney and Nicole; Rick Smurzynski (Tami), and their daughters, Simone and Lily; Jeff Smurzynski Jr.; Sarith Ban and his family, Sary and Rohrs Ban; and Billy and Janice Rinehart.

A service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, 456 West Pine Street, Central Point, at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 29, 2008, with a reception to follow.

Arrangements are being handled by Neptune Cremation Service.
