Dr. Reinhold A. Sundeen

1917 - 2013

Reinhold "Reiny" Sundeen passed away peacefully at his home May 16, 2013. He was 96. Reiny was born to Abram and Jenny Sundeen, April 11, 1917, in Evanston, Ill. He spent his youth in the Evanston area, as well as his first four years of college at North Park and Northwestern University. Reiny received his medical degree from the University of Michigan in 1942. He married an Evanston girl, Elizabeth "Betty" McCreary in 1941. During WWII, he served as a Naval Medical officer aboard troop ships - "Yachting for the Navy" as he often said. Betty and Reiny had five children over the next 13 years.

Reiny was a general practice physician in Ripon, Wis. and in Arcadia, Calif. for more than 15 years. In 1959 the family moved to Los Altos, Calif. where he began a new residency in psychiatry. His psychiatric practice was affiliated with El Camino Hospital - a new and progressive facility. Reiny took great pride in this association, especially being part of the Medical Ethics Committee for three years. He and Betty retired to Ashland, Ore. in 1992.

Reiny's retirement was full and stimulating. He was a reading club member, part of a men's discussion group, a gardener, a League of Women Voters consultant, and served with the Jackson County Mental Health Advisory Committee. Reiny was passionate about End of Life Care and gave many lectures on "Death with Dignity" in the Rogue Valley.

Reiny's other passion was music. He began singing in choirs as a young boy and continued singing until he was 95 as a member of the Siskiyou Singers. "Music has been an elixir that has extended my life."

Reiny often commented on how lucky he was to have lived so long and to have had such a fabulous life.

He was preceded in death by his wife of over 60 years. He is survived by his children, James (Mary) Sundeen, of Port Townsend, Wash., Barbara (Craig) Binnall, of Bonners Ferry, Idaho, Mary (Bruce) Bergstrom, of Ashland, Ore., Margaret (Vernon) Sundeen, of Rogue River, Ore., and Patricia (Brian) Lewis, of Roseville, Calif.; his 13 grandchildren; and his 14 great-grandchildren. He is survived by his longtime partner, Jane Ann Henderson and her daughters, Jeanine, Jocelyn, and Jennifer.

A memorial service for Reiny will be held at the Ashland Presbyterian Church at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, June 15, 2013. Donations can be made in his name to the Community Health Center in Ashland, Ore.
