Dorothy Marie Custer



Dorothy Marie Custer passed peacefully away on May 15, 2009 at Good Shepherd Guest Home. She was born April 8, 1924 in Baker, Ore., She was the eldest child born to Harry and Tillie Mattes, who preceded her in death. She graduated high school at St. Francis Academy in Baker, Ore., in 1942. She worked at the shipyards in Portland, Ore., during WWII as a welder. She also worked there as a telegrapher for Western Union. She was a meat wrapper for Oregon Food Store in Klamath Falls, Ore. and Fred Meyers in Portland and Purity Food Store in Napa, Calif. She came to Medford, Ore., in 1967 and had lived here until her passing. In Medford she was employed at RVMC hospital as an institutional cook, then at Cascade Wood Products as a cutter.

Most of all she loved our country and it's veterans. She was proud of the service her brother, Harry and her son, Robert, gave for their country. She always had a soft spot for all our veterans. She belonged to the VFW of Central Point. She was a member at Sacred Heart Church and worked at St. Vincent DePauls soup kitchen for many years. She also was a foster grandparent at Jefferson School. She retired to Ross Knotts Retirement Center and lived there for 15 years.

Dorothy was lovingly cared for by Good Shepherd Guest Home for her last — years. Lisa and George Haefling, Becky, Eva, and all of the staff there, May God bless all of you.

We, her family, sincerely thank Dr. Yeakey, Pat Elderton from senior services for supporting her. And finally, all the care and love from Providence Hospice, especially Nancy, Christina, Lori the Harpist, The threshhold singers. Many blessings to Barbara Scott from "The Lady's touch" massage, and to Donny Roze for his music and uplifting love and spirit to the elders.

Dorothy is survived by sisters, LaRayne Harris and Ruth Robb; brother, Harry R. Mattes; sons, Robert Bowen and Bill Custer; daughter, Patricia Jensen; grandchildren, Star Jensen, Patrick Jensen and Heidi Mallari; great-grandchildren, Cezanna, Lydia, Troy Derek, Tristan; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be sent to St. Vincent DePaul or Providence Hospice.

Services for Dorothy will be held Wednesday, May 27, 2009. Rosary service will be at 8:00 a.m. with Funeral Mass to follow at 8:30 a.m. Interment to take place at Memorial Gardens.
