Dorothy Joyce ("Joy") Lenaerts

Joy Lenaerts, 80, died on December 15, 2007, in Ashland.

Joy was born in the London suburb of Croydon on November 15, 1927, to Victor and Georgina Alexander Lenaerts, the third of four children. She was educated at the City of London Freemen's School. Her school days coincided with the London Blitz and she found herself at times doing her homework in bomb shelters. Shortly after graduation, she served in the WRENS, the Women's Royal Naval Service.

In 1952, she married Frank Carter, a civil engineer, and with him traveled and resided in a number of countries in Europe, the Middle East, the Far East and the Caribbean.

Following their divorce in 1967, she moved to California and lived in San Luis Obispo until 1988, when she married Isaac Walker, a retired professor of English. They moved to Ashland in that year.

Joy loved the arts, particularly literature and music. She was passionate about reading, held an M.A. degree in English, and taught college English in California. In Ashland, she was the piano accompanist for a dance class and volunteered at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. She was active in peace and justice issues, serving as editor of the Peace House newsletter and was active in other Ashland progressive groups. She was also an accomplished cook, and in earlier years, an avid swimmer, bicyclist and hiker.

Joy was a truly remarkable woman, embracing many different roles throughout her life; all who knew her knew she was one of a kind. But she will be remembered first and foremost as a loving, compassionate, and courageous mother, with an incredibly beautiful smile. Joy will be greatly missed by the many who loved her.

She is survived by Isaac Walker of Ashland, her ex-husband and long-time companion; by two brothers, Victor Lenaerts of London (Ontario), Canada and David Lenaerts of Pittsfield, N.H.; by six children, Simon Pont of Devon, England, Amanda Buscher of Buckinghamshire, England, Vicky Phillips of San Luis Obispo, Calif., Nicola Bishop of Christchurch, New Zealand, Simon Carter of London, England and Howard Carter of West Sussex, England; and by 13 grandchildren.

A private memorial service to celebrate Joy's life will be held at a later date.

Arrangements by Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home, Ashland, OR.
