May 7, 1927 - February 4, 2018
Donald Lee Smith, 90, passed away peacefully February 4, 2018 at his home in Phoenix surrounded by family after a long battle with Alzheimer's. He was born May 7, 1927 to Marshel and Vina Smith in Protem, Missouri.
While attending School of the Ozarks, he fell in love with the girl of his dreams, Nina May Holt. They were married December 9, 1944. They moved to Oregon in 1947 and raised their six children in Klamath Falls. Don once remarked that the most important day for him was Father’s Day, because that was the most rewarding job he ever had.
While in Klamath Falls, Don worked for and retired from Weyerhaeuser. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and camping with family. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1988 and continued to enjoy the outdoors. Don especially liked the climate for his garden.
He is survived by sons, Jerry (Linda) Klamath Falls, Rex (Terri) Oregon City, Rick (Susie) Phoenix, Ronald (Barbara) Willamina, Marshel (Nora) Eagle Point; daughter, Donna (Don) McNair, Ashland; 13 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Nina.
He was a wonderful, loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He will be deeply missed.
At his request, there will be no services.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent to Alzheimer's Association.
A special thanks to Shane and Bob at Signature Hospice for their compassion and help to Don and his family during the difficult transition.
