Donald H. Abel, 67, passed away at his home on February 2, 2014 with his family at hand. After his cancer diagnosis, friends and family brought him caring support and all the desserts he loved.
Donald was born in New York on November 22, 1946 to Sidney and Virginia Abel (Dean). He grew up in the Midwest and graduated from the University of Chicago. He met his wife in San Francisco and together they moved to Ashland to start a family in 1978. At this time Donald started his career at Ashland Community Hospital where he remained until his retirement in 2009.
Donald was a devoted father and grandfather. He spent countless hours volunteering in their classrooms and brought abundant patience and hands-on projects with him. Donald also got a teaching credential from SOU and taught part-time in a variety of settings.
The Ashland Zen Center was Donald's spiritual home and his practice helped him find joy and peace in his final days. We will all miss his quiet affection, sense of humor, and sharp mind.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth Coulthard; daughters, Zoe and Marley; foster-son, Robin Fredeking; grandson, Silas; and brother, Dean. He was preceded in death by his son, Tyler.
A private memorial service will be held for family and friends.
