David William (Bill) Jones

David William (Bill) Jones

Bill was born in the back seat of his parent's (Lois Foster Jones and Herbert Jones) 1939 Buick on June 15, 1946. His early years were spent in the desert in 29 Palms, Calif. His family moved to Los Angeles when he was very young, but he always enjoyed returning to the desert for family camping trips to Joshua Tree National Monument Park.

He had wonderful stories about the adventures he, his brother, R.L. Larry Jones, cousins, and friends shared. These reflected his joy of learning and a connection to the natural world. Bill was active in Boy Scouts and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout.

He left Los Angeles for Arcata, Calif. in 1964 to attend Humboldt State University to pursue his dream of becoming a forester. During his freshman year he met his beloved Ruthie (Ruth Morehouse). They were married after their graduation from Humboldt in June of 1968. He was drafted and shipped off to Vietnam a few short months later.

After Vietnam, Bill returned to his work with the Bonneville Power Administration in Portland, Ore. In Portland they welcomed their first son, Jeffrey David, and a few years later, daughter, Elizabeth Lynn. In 1975 Bill began what would be a 30 year career with the U.S. Forest Service as a silviculturist, a career that he loved and excelled at, that connected him to dear friends and stunning places.

In 1981, Bill and Ruth welcomed their second son, Timothy William. With his family complete, Bill passed on his love for nature, learning, sense of humor, and strong Christian belief to his children.

Bill retired from the Forest Service in 2005, ending his career in order to pursue his many hobbies and interests. When not traveling, Bill could be found gardening, working in his vineyard, restoring his Ford Model A and T, or making pancakes with his grandchildren, Asta Elise Jensen and Syriana Grace Jones.

Bill lived his life with integrity. His choices always reflected his beliefs. He loved being a husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and teacher. His knowledge, commitment, and energy will be dearly missed.

He passed away March 11, 2014. Bill also leaves behind his dear son-in-law, Thomas Dahl Jensen, and son Timothy's fiance, Katrina Garvey.

Interment and a military service will be held for Bill at 1:00 p.m. Friday, April 4, 2014 at Eagle Point National Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, April 5, 2014 at the First Presbyterian Church located on 8th and Holly, Medford, Ore.
