Charles Michael Mike Helfrich

Mike was born December 4, 1942, in Portland, Ore., the son of John Michael and Lelah Marguerite (Schirmer) Helfrich, and passed away September 24, 2011, in Tucson, Ariz., at the age of 68.

Mike was a graduate of North Eugene High School and Southern Oregon College. He retired as a vice president of US Bank after 25 years. Mike was also very active in youth athletics, spending 25 years coaching various sports, including 15 years as a volunteer coach for Marshfield High School Football. He was a past president of Jaycees, Lions, Kiwanis, Booster Clubs and Brookings, Ore., Ashland, Ore., and Bay Area Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of the Rogue Valley and Coos Country Club. Mike was active in the Coos Bay-North Bend Water Board as vice chair and budget committee, Oregon International Port of Coos Bay and budget committee, Charleston Advisory Committee, Bay Area Sportsman's Association, Coos Bay-North Bend Visitor and Convention Bureau, South Coast Marine Reserve Recommendation Committee, Coos County Urban renewal and Southwestern Oregon Community College.

Mike's retirement was filled with his favorite activities. He spent countless hours with his wife, Linda, as well as fishing, hunting, crabbing, clamming, and attending every possible athletic event he could, sandwiched between time spent with his sons and grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Linda K. Helfrich; sons, John Helfrich, and his wife, Sheila and their children, Joe, Mollin and Jane Helfrich; and Mark Helfrich and his wife, Megan, and their children, Max and Maggie James Helfrich; and brother, Patrick Helfrich, and wife, Joan.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A celebration of life service for Charles will be held Thursday, September 29, 2011, 1:00 PM at the Marshfield High School Harding Building Gymnasium, 755 S. 7th St., Coos Bay, Ore., with Pastor Don Berney of New Beginnings Fellowship officiating. A reception will immediately follow at Pete Susick Stadium behind the gym. Private cremation rites have been held.
