Chuck Madary passed away peacefully June 24, 2018 in Springfield, Oregon from complications of a stroke and most recently, pneumonia. Until 2017 he had resided in Medford and moved to Eugene to be closer to family. Chuck was born in 1935 in Chicago to Stanley and Ruth Madary.
After graduating in 1953 from the University of Illinois, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. Those days, traveling around the world was among his favorites, and he was always eager to share stories of his days as a signalman.
Upon the advice of a fellow Navy man, Chuck came to the University of Oregon and attained his Master degree in 1961. After completing his degree, Chuck obtained a position teaching physical education and coaching sports at McLoughlin Junior High School and later, at Hedrick Junior High School. Chuck sincerely loved his 32 years of teaching. He always enjoyed meeting former students and colleagues throughout the community.
It was at McLoughlin Junior High School that Chuck met the love of his life, a fellow teacher, Sandra Lien. They were married in 1964 at Ascension Lutheran Church and had 54 wonderful years. Together they raised three children, Scott, Carol, and Colleen. Chuck enjoyed sports (an avid Black Tornado and Duck fan), woodworking, gardening, and traveling to the Oregon coast. Trips to Europe and cruises to Alaska, Hawaii, and the Caribbean were truly memorable.
Most important to Chuck were his many friends and family. He is survived by his wife, Sandra; his children, Scott (Monica), Carol (Richard), and Colleen (Robert). He treasured his grandchildren, David, Timothy, Brett, Jordan, Jaden, Logan, and Christina. Also surviving are two brothers, James (Shirley) and Robert.
A celebration of life is being planned at the Oregon coast where Chuck enjoyed visiting.
