The funeral service for Alfred Alexander Gilley will be held Friday, July 25, 2008, at 11 a.m., at Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home, 1811 Ashland St., Ashland, Ore. Brother Greg Weston of the Park Street Church of Christ will officiate. Private interment will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park, Medford.



A visitation will be held Friday, July, 25, 2008, from 8:30 a.m.-10:30 a.m. at Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home.



Mr. Gilley, 92, of Ashland, died Sunday, July 20, 2008, at his home.



He was born May 22, 1916, in Wiggins, Miss., to Grover C. and Ethel (Cone) Gilley. His parents and family moved to Hornbrook, Calif., in 1933. Alfred graduated from Yreka High School and then worked for Fruit Growers Lumber Company in Hilt, Calif.



In 1941 Alfred went to work on the Southern Pacific Railroad in Dunsmuir, Calif. He worked as a locomotive engineer for 28 years before retirement. On Jan. 12, 1942, at Virginia City, Nev., he married the former Peggy Ring Johnson, who survives. He was a member of the 20/30 Club and the Elks Lodge.



Alfred loved to hunt and fish, and a highlight of his life was a trip to Alaska in 1962 with his wife Peggy, her parents, Marvin and Annie Ring, and Alfred's father, Grover Gilley. They were joined in Alaska by Peggy's brother, David Ring, and his family, who live in Anchorage, Alaska.



Survivors in addition to his wife Peggy of Ashland include son, Donald Johnson of Medford; sister, Martha Brown of Roseburg, Ore.; and brother, Kensley Gilley of Salem, Ore. He will be greatly missed by his loved ones and many friends.
