Wimer area fire spurs evacuation

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office is issuing evacuation notices to 58 addresses north of Wimer this afternoon due to the Garner Complex of a dozen wildfires.

The U.S. Forest Service notified the sheriff’s office that community notifications were advised because of changes in fire behavior, sheriff’s officials said.

Deputies and search and rescue personnel began conducting door-to-door notifications to provide information.

A Level 2 “be set” to evacuate notice was in effect for addresses between 5047 and 7948 Pleasant Creek Road.

Officials said some of the addresses along Pleasant Creek Road would not receive notifications because they were outside the evacuation advisory map section. However, officials urged all residents in the area to be vigilant and watch for updates.

The Garner Complex was estimated to be 960 acres Wednesday morning. It was caused by a lightning storm that sparked more than 100 local fires on Sunday.

According to a Wednesday morning update, 542 personnel were working the fires with nine engines, two water tenders, eight helicopters and seven dozers.

Crews were working to prioritize the dozen fires, contain the smaller fires, construct fire lines around the larger blazes and continue to look for fires at the location that hadn’t yet been spotted.

Agencies cooperating on the Garner Complex include the Oregon Department of Forestry, the Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Forest Service and the Rogue Valley Fire Chiefs Association.
