Oregon senator's wife killed in crash

Oregon State Police are investigating a fatal crash that killed the wife of a state senator Saturday night.

Oregon Public Broadcasting (http://bit.ly/2pmR1h1 ) reports that a red 2013 Kenworth semi-truck hauling a box trailer was unable to avoid 54-year-old Leta Baertschiger while she was out walking in the right lane of Interstate 5 near Grants Pass just before 8 p.m., OSP reported. She died at the scene.

Baertschiger is the wife of Herman Baertschiger, a Republican state senator from Grants Pass.

State police are unsure why the woman was walking along the interstate. The crash occurred near milepost 58 and closed both southbound lanes for about an hour.

Diaz was uninjured and is cooperating with investigators, an OSP release said.

Baertschiger is survived by her husband and two sons.

"If you look up the word wife, mother, grandmother, you'll find her name," Baertschiger told the Statesman Journal in Salem this morning.

"She was the only partner I've ever had."

OSP was assisted by the Oregon Department of Transportation, Grants Pass Fire Department and Grants Pass Department of Public Safety.
