Man killed, two injured in head-on collision near Diamond Lake

A head-on collision Friday morning killed one person, seriously injured two others and closed state Highway 230 a half-mile south of its junction with Highway 138 near Diamond Lake.

According to Oregon State Police, a 2007 Chevrolet Silverado pulling a utility trailer, driven by Mark Andrew Root, 49, of Eagle Point was traveling eastbound on Highway 230 when the Chevrolet drifted into the westbound lane. Root collided with a white 2006 Kia Amanti driven by William Hunter Houff, 56, of Idaho Falls, Idaho. Lisa Barnett Carr, 54, also of Idaho Falls, was a passenger in Houff's vehicle.

Houff was pronounced dead at the scene, according to OSP. Root was transported by air ambulance to Bend Hospital with serious injuries. Carr was transported by air ambulance to River Bend Hospital in Springfield with serious injuries.

OSP said seat belts were not being used by those involved in the accident.

OSP was assisted by Central Point and Grants Pass police, the Douglas County Sheriff's Office, Oregon Department of Transportation, Douglas County Fire District 2, AirLink and ReachAir.
