Man dies in fall at Crater Lake

CRATER LAKE NATIONAL PARK - A 20-year-old man died Tuesday morning at Crater Lake National Park after falling from a cliff ledge into Crater Lake's caldera.

The fall was reported at 5:40 a.m. Tuesday between Rim Village and Discovery Point. The man was from Florida, officials said, but the name of the victim was not released pending notification of next of kin.

Alec Chapman, a Crater Lake National Park supervisory ranger, said witnesses told park rangers the man had scrambled down inside the caldera and walked onto a rocky point, where rocks he was standing on broke loose. The victim fell approximately 50 to 70 feet. Rangers rappelled down into the caldera and located the body. No other details were available.
