Home run derby to benefit teacher's family

EAGLE POINT — Kids and adults from across the Rogue Valley are invited join in a home run derby contest to raise money for the family of an Eagle Point High School special education teacher who was killed in a head-on collision.

The "Dingers for Shannon" home run derby is from 1 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday at the softball fields of the high school, located at 203 N. Platt Ave.

The fundraising event is being put on by the high school's varsity and junior varsity softball teams to support the Shannon O'Morris Memorial Fund.

O'Morris was involved in a head-on collision with another vehicle May 9. Despite fighting hard and receiving excellent medical care, O'Morris passed away May 14, surrounded by her family, organizers of the home run derby said.

She is survived by her husband and five children, including a baby.

In addition to being a special education teacher who devoted her life to serving special-needs students and their families, O'Morris was active in the softball, soccer, 4-H and Future Farmers of America communities.

The cost per person for the home run derby is $10 for 15 pitches. Local coaches will serve as pitchers, with batters competing in kid, high school student, and adult age categories. Prizes will be awarded to the top three winners in each category.

Local professional singers Bernadette and Glenn Davis will kick off the derby with the national anthem. Rowdy, the mascot of the Medford Rogues baseball team, will throw out the first pitch.

Food will be available for purchase at concession stands, along with "Shine for Shannon" T-shirts. Local Eagle Point businesses are also supporting the fundraiser.

All proceeds will go toward the Shannon O'Morris Memorial Fund to help her family. Donations can also be  made to the fund at any Rogue Credit Union branch.

A memorial service for O'Morris is at 10 a.m. Saturday at Trail Christian Fellowship, 18881 Highway 62 outside Eagle Point. The service will be followed by a potluck reception.
