Body found in Bear Creek near mall

Medford police this afternoon pulled the body of a man who apparently drowned in the swollen waters of Bear Creek near the Rogue Valley Mall parking lot.

Mall shoppers about 3:45 p.m. noticed the body lodged in a tree inside the creek and called police, who pulled the body out along the Bear Creek Greenway, police said. The man was found between East McAndrews Road and Crater Lake Highway, a release said.

The man was believed to be a local transient and appears to have drowned, according to a Medford police Facebook post. The post said there was no immediate evidence of foul play.

Medford police Sgt. Trevor Arnold at the scene said the body was that of a black male in his 20s or 30s, but he declined to identify the man until next of kin have been notified.

It is unknown where the man entered the water or how long he'd been there, the release said.

In addition to Medford police, Medford Fire and Rescue and Mercy Ambulance also responded.
