Here are the two contenders for Medford City Council, Ward 1, which covers northeast Medford. Ballots go out Friday, Oct. 21, and are due back to the Jackson County Elections Office by 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 8.

Curt Ankerberg

Age: 63

Occupation: Certified public accountant, pro bono math tutor for Medford schools

Education: Bachelor of Science in business administration/accounting, California State University, Los Angeles. Also completed seven graduate-level business courses

Political experience: None

Top priorities if elected: Build an affordable community swimming pool, skate parks and a homeless shelter; reduce city licenses, fees, permits and regulations; revitalize downtown and increase parking; increase police on the streets; reduce government waste; not increase taxes; oversee a transparent, efficient and clean government.

Dick Gordon

Age: 73

Occupation: Medford city councilor since 2009, volunteer

Education: Medford Senior High School; Bachelor of Science, Oregon State University

Political experience: Governor's Area Manpower Coordinating Committee, Medford School Board, Medford Planning Commission, Medford City Council, League of Oregon Cities board

Top priorities if re-elected: 1) Public safety — understanding every resident needs to feel safe and deserves timely responses to emergencies. This includes having adequate infrastructure and staffing. 2) Health and education — We must support healthcare and area employers through providing an educated workforce and ensuring the availability of workforce housing. This will promote the health and prosperity of our community.
