Woman's death may have been a homicide

GRANTS PASS — Investigators suspect foul play in the death of an 82-year-old woman earlier this month.

Lola A. Pierce, of the 1800 block of Cloverlawn Drive, was found dead in her home Nov. 17 when police went to check on her after getting a report that she hadn't been seen for several days, Grants Pass Department of Public Safety Detective Sgt. Rob Gunderson said in a news release Monday.

Although nothing seemed suspicious initially, the case was forwarded to detectives for routine follow-up of an unattended death, Gunderson said. Detectives went to Pierce's home Nov. 19 and met with out-of-state relatives who had been notified about the death.

Interviews with family members and evidence detectives saw at the home aroused the suspicions of investigators and they ordered an autopsy. In the autopsy, the medical examiner concluded that the death was a homicide, Gunderson said in the release.

Oregon State Police crime lab specialists collected evidence at the home last week and detectives continue to investigate.

Gunderson said the department initially didn't report suspicions to the media so the suspect wouldn't get wind of the investigation. No arrests have been made.

Even now, details about the cause and circumstances of death aren't being released, he said. However, investigators are asking anyone with information about Pierce to call detectives at 474-6370.
