Woman faces murder charge in husband's shooting

A woman is facing a murder charge in the Tuesday night shooting death of her husband just outside Central Point.

Susan Marie King, 55, was arraigned Wednesday in Jackson County Circuit Court on murder, elude and impaired driving charges in the wake of a shooting at their home at 2830 Oakridge Ave., which proved fatal for her husband, 58-year-old Duane Levon King.

At about 8:25 p.m. Tuesday, Jackson County sheriff's deputies were called out following reports of shots fired and a domestic disturbance.

Deputies arrived on scene about eight minutes later and saw King attempting to leave in her vehicle, according to a release issued by Jackson County sheriff's deputies.

About the same time, deputies found Duane King unresponsive on the property. First responders attempted to render aid, but he succumbed to his injuries.

A search warrant was executed on the property early Wednesday morning, according to the release, and an autopsy is slated for Thursday afternoon.

King entered not guilty pleas at her initial court appearance charging her with murder, attempting to elude police in a vehicle and driving under the influence of intoxicants. She is being held in the Jackson County Jail without bail.

Aside from a 2008 speeding ticket, court records show King has no prior criminal history.

Jackson County property records show that the one-story, 3,214-square-foot home was sold to Duane King and the former Susan Jackson in July 2001. Oakridge Avenue is part of a rural subdivision off Ross Lane on a rural stretch of road between Hanley Road and Old Stage Road.
