Staff report

A crash between a van and compact pickup closed Foothill Road for an hour late this morning and sent one driver to the hospital with a broken leg.

At just before 11 a.m., a dark blue Ford Ranger pickup driven by Ricky Wayne Fielder Jr., 48, of Central Point collided with a white cargo van driven by Michael Joseph O'Shea, 46, of White City, according to the Jackson County Sheriff's Office.

Fielder had been headed north and was attempting to turn onto Coker Butte when he collided with O'Shea headed in the opposite direction, according to sheriff's Sgt. Julie Denney.

"One vehicle turned in front of the other, but they did collide head-on," Denney said.

Fielder was transported to Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center, where he was treated for a broken leg. O'Shea was able to walk away.

Both vehicles sustained heavy damage in the crash and Fielder was cited for careless driving.
