Transient faces sex-abuse charges, authorities fear more victims

A 36-year-old transient faces sexual abuse and attempted sexual abuse charges in incidents involving two Jackson County girls, and investigators fear he may have more victims in the area.

Michael James Rardin was arraigned today in Jackson County Circuit Court on charges of first-degree sexual abuse and private indecency from his most recent victim and attempted first-degree sexual abuse of an earlier victim, court documents allege.

The case began in November 2017 after Rardin allegedly had a 10-year-old girl touch his penis earlier that month, according to court documents. During the investigation, detectives learned of another girl who claimed Rardin attempted to sexually abuse her sometime between late November 2014 and November 2015, court records show.

During the investigation, Rardin left the area, and he was indicted on the charges Nov. 22, 2017, according to the Jackson County Sheriff's Office.

Rardin returned to Jackson County Friday and was arrested at the courthouse, deputies said. He was lodged in the Jackson County Jail on $250,000 bail.

Detectives said Rardin is a transient who was known to have stayed at several different homes in Jackson County as well as in California and Iowa. Based on information obtained during the investigation, detectives fear Rardin may have more victims.

Anyone with information on the case was urged to call Detective Steve Bohn at 541-774-6168.
