Toddler drowns in Medford pool

A 2-year-old girl was found drowned in a swimming pool Saturday at a home in east Medford.

Emergency responders were called to the home at about 5 p.m. in the 400 block of Golf View Drive after the child was found in a pool in the backyard, said Medford Fire Battalion Chief Fred LaBrasseur.

Someone at the home performed CPR on the child before Medford paramedics arrived on the scene, where they put her on advanced life support. She was transported to Rogue Valley Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.

LaBrasseur said he didn't know how long the child was in the water before she was discovered. Medford police are investigating the incident.

Two police officers stood outside the gray ranch-style house in the tidy neighborhood off East Barnett Road as Medford police detectives investigated late Saturday.

Medford police Sgt. Chad Teresi said he could not immediately provide details on the name of the toddler, who was at the home at the time of her drowning, nor whether any charges would be filed. More details were expected today.

There have been four child drownings in residential pools in Jackson County since 2000, according to a count from the Mail Tribune archives.

The most recent was 2-year-old Joshua Tyler West of Medford who drowned Sept. 5 in a family pool after his 17-year-old babysitter left him unattended.

The National Center for Health Statistics records about 4,000 drownings each year nationally, the majority in pools.

Drownings remain the second leading cause of injury-related death among children under 15, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

A majority die in residential pools with a parent nearby.
