Three men have been charged with Measure 11 crimes after allegedly taking part in a scheme to pistol-whip and rob a man they thought possessed a large amount of cash to buy drugs.
The robbery netted just $60 and a debit card, the victim told Medford police, according to an affidavit filed in the case.
Richard Steven Kohl, 25, of the 11100 block of Blackwell Road in Central Point, was charged with second-degree robbery, second-degree assault and unlawful use of a weapon. The robbery and assault charges each carry mandatory minimum sentences of five years and 10 months in prison under Oregon's tough-on-crime Measure 11 law.
Zachary Michael Bump, 27, of the 2600 block of Falcon Street in White City, and Dylan Louis McAlmond, 24, of the 900 block of Park Avenue in Medford each face a second-degree robbery charge.
The two entered not guilty pleas Tuesday and have pre-trial conferences scheduled for June 19. Kohl has yet to enter a plea to the charges, according to Jackson County Circuit Court records.
According to the affidavit, the victim said he was dropping a woman off at a Medford hotel when Kohl got into his vehicle, pointed a pistol at him and demanded his money. The victim began driving while the man threatened several times to shoot him. He then parked and the man pistol-whipped him, took his debit card and $60 cash, got out of the vehicle and was picked up by a car that had been following them.
A witness said Bump and McAlmond were in the car, knew the robbery was occurring and had been chasing the victim's vehicle. Kohl allegedly bragged about the robbery and assault when he got into the vehicle with the other two men, the affidavit said.
McAlmond allegedly told investigators he witnessed Kohl and Bump planning the robbery because they thought the victim was going to have cash to buy drugs. McAlmond allegedly confessed to driving the car that followed the victim in order to aid in the robbery, the affidavit said.
Bump allegedly confirmed he was in the following car, but denied knowing about the robbery, the affidavit said.
The victim suffered visible injuries to the side of his face where he said he was struck with the pistol, the affidavit said.
