Text message scam targets credit union customers

Scam text messages purporting to be from local credit unions have popped up on cell phones across the Rogue Valley, asking people to call a toll-free number, then verify their identities by entering debit card numbers and other information into an automated system.

Medford police have gotten several calls reporting the fake messages today, Medford police Detective Sgt. Mike Budreau said. None of the callers has reported responding to the message or losing money.

Budreau said the messages claimed to come from Rogue Federal Credit Union and Southern Oregon Federal Credit Union, but actually came from false e-mail accounts that are difficult to trace back to actual owners.

He reminded people not to call unfamiliar numbers sent to them in this manner. Anyone who has responded should contact their financial institution to report that their account might be compromised.
