Teen surrenders to face charges in park stabbing

MEDFORD — A teenager with no known address turned himself in to Medford police Tuesday to face charges linked to a stabbing at Hawthorne Park over the weekend.

Michael David Paul Reel, 17, was lodged at the Jackson County Juvenile Detention Center on a charge of second-degree assault, Medford police Sgt. Mark Bell said.

Investigators linked him to an altercation in Hawthorne Park at about 5 p.m. Saturday that resulted in a man being stabbed. Reel and the victim, a homeless man in his 40s, had clashed in the past, and Reel and his friends wanted the older man out of the park, Bell said.

During the verbal altercation, Reel pulled out a knife and stabbed the other man, Bell said. The victim's wounds weren't life threatening and he was treated and released at a Medford hospital.
